The Gibtelecom chess festival 2008 is promising a strong and diverse event. It is divided into a Masters tournament, two Challenger tournaments, amateur events, evening events, and multiple chess activities. The Masters event will see 100+ players, as more than 20 of them will be 2600+ according to the January 2008 FIDE rating list. Next Politiken Cup, to also act as 30th Copenhagen Open, is set to take place on 19th-27th July 2008. Organizers are keen to break this year’s record when 325 players took participation and large number of Grandmasters is promising possibilities to earn IM and GM norms. Playing venue is again the beautiful Lo-skolen college.
The 83rd Celebration Hastings International Chess Congress will be opened on Friday 28th December. Entries are coming in from around the world and entries in the Masters Tournament already include grandmasters and woman grandmasters from 25 countries.
The 17th Torneo Internacional Ciudad de Pamplona, sponsored by the Government of Navarre and the City council of Pamplona and organized by the Institution Oberena, is taking place on 22nd-29th December at the Iruna Park Hotel, Pamplona. Main tournament will be 8 player round robin of 17th category. There is an interesting novelty in prize fund distribution, related to the fight against draws. Out of 7.000 Euros, half will be given according to the final standings, the other half goes by the number of wins.
The 25th Morelia – Linares chess tournament is going to take place this spring in Mexico and Spain. It is going to be a double round robin tournament with 8 participants. The first part of the round robin event will be February 15 – 23 in Morelia, Mexico. The second part will take place at Linares, Spain, 28th of February to 7th of March. Anand, Ivanchuk, Topalov, Radjabov, Carlsen, Leko, Shirov, and Aronian will participate.
Reggio Emilia tournament is celebrating its 50th aniversary with a 16-category event. What started as small local tournament back in 1958, sprouted into prominent happening by the early 90′s, when both Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov sat on the stage. List of the Reggio Emilia winners is outstanding, Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Nona Gaprindashvili, Lajos Portish, Ulf Andersson, Rafael Vaganian, to mention a few.
The 37th Rilton Cup will take place from 27th December 2007 to 5th January 2008 in Stockholm, Sweden. This year’s tournament, with a prize fund of 22 000 Euro, will be played over 9 rounds in three groups: Rilton Cup, Rilton Elo and Rilton Open.
European Rapid Chess Championship 2007 will take place December 15-16 in Warsaw, Poland. A total of 582 players will participate in the event as 41 of them are 2500+. The field is led by GM Vugar Gashimov.
