Following the huge success of the last year’s SPICE Cup, Texas Tech University and Susan Polgar Foundation have decided to expand the festival activities and provide an even stronger player lineup. Original idea was to compose 13th or 14th category field, but according to the recent information posted on Susan Polgar’s blog, the upcoming 2008 SPICE Cup will be a category 15 event, which is the highest rated 10-player International RR tournament in U.S. history.
Already two months before the start, the field is extremely strong, with three Grandmasters rated above 2600 FIDE. So far 133 players registered, top rated are 2007 US champion GM Alexander Shabalov 2633, GM Vadim Malakhatko 2621, GM Yuriy Kryvoruchko 2612, GM Mykhailo Oleksienko 2591, GM Stelios Halkias 2584, GM Dimitris Mastrovasilis 2580, GM Robert Fontaine 2563, GM Mircea Parligras 2561 and GM David Alberto 2557.
Magnus Carlsen had a sequence of fantastic results since the 2007 World Cup, which rose him to 2765 rating points and 5th place at the FIDE list. The young Norwegian is also dangerous in fast time controls, having won the 2006 Glitnir Blitz and tied second at this year’s Melodi Amber. It is interesting to note that Carlsen never won a single game against Leko, many clashes finished in draws, while Leko won three games with white pieces.
The Armenian Chess Federation is organizing a “Chess Giants Yerevan 2008” Rapid Round-Robin Tournament. The tournament will be with the participation eight of the of world’s top Grandmasters and the top seeded is GM Alexander Morozevich.
The annual international open chess tournament “Summer Cup 2008″ will be organised this year in Porto Carras, Greece, the same venue which was chosen by the EU for the European Leaders Summit 2003! Famous politicians such as Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac, Silvio Berlusconi, Gerhard Schroeder, Jose Maria Aznar, Konstantinos Simitis and many more were hosted in 2003 in Porto Carras
The 2008 Kaupthing Open launches off with the first round today in Differdange, Luxembourg, and goes on until the Saturday, May 17th. A total of 100 players are fighting in the Open A section for the lucrative prize fund of 17.000 Euro. In addition, there are 79 participants in the Open B and 24 in the Open C-Youth.
The international chess tournament Foros Aerosvit 2008 will take place in Ukraine 7-20.06.2008. The top seeded player will be GM Magnus Carlsen.
The chess club “Galaxias Sports Club of Thessaloniki is organizing the 2nd International Chess Rapid Tournament “Alexander the Great Cup”.
The European Club Cup 2008 (24th European Club Cup for Men, 13th European Club Cup for Women) will be held in from Thursday 16th until Friday 24th October. It will be in the G-Hotels complex (Athos Palace and Theofano Imperial Palace) in Kallithea (Greece) , where these days the Halkidiki Chess Open is taking place.
