The international chess tournament Acropolis starts today in Greece. 15 GMs over 2500 ELO will participate in the competition. Top seeded will be GM Ilia Smirin, the winner of last year’s tournament. Many players from the just finished Kavala tournament will join the competition – GM Gelashvili, WGM Anna Rudolf, etc.
Parallel to the World junior Chess Championships, the EU Youth Chess Championships (EUYCC 2008) will take place in Murecek. A total of 175 young chess talents will take part in the competition.
The 6th Howard Staunton Memorial will take place on 7-18th August at Simpsons in the Strand, London. Traditionally, an equal number of players from Netherlands and United Kingdom will be featured in the starting lineup. The final individual scores will be summed up to determinate the ‘winning country’. Last year Holland won convincingly 38:28, but England’s Mickey Adams claimed the tournament with 8.5/11, full point ahead of Ivan Sokolov.
