Serbian Chess Championship will take place on 2-15th April in Hotel “Šumarice” in the city of Kragujevac. The top seeded player is GM Ivan Ivanisevic (2628), who is defending the last year’s title.

A fantastic event is coming up next month with California’s #1 GM Varuzhan Akobian meeting the U.S. Champion GM Yury Shulman in a four day rapid match with a blitz finale. The two great tacticians of the chess board, both members of the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist team, will meet in the California’s First GrandMaster Invitational World Class Chess Event which will be held April 22nd-25th 2009 in Lake County, California.

The teams of Solingen, Tegernsee, Eppingen and Bremen are fighting for two qualification places for the European Club Cup. Tegernsee and Bremen seem to have the best chances thanks to their easier schedule.

World Chess Cup 2009

World Chess Cup 2009

The 2009 World Chess Cup, an integral part of the World Championship Cycle 2009-2011, will take place in Khanty Mansiysk from 20th November to 15th December. The tournament once again is a knock out event with 128 players. There shall be six (6) rounds of matches comprising two (2) games per round, with the winners progressing to the next round, plus the final seventh (7th) round comprising of four (4) games.

The fifth international chess superturnament M-Tel Masters will be held from 12th to 23rd May in Sofia, Bulgaria. Six top Grandmasters will play double round robin event in a special glass aquarium to be built on the square in front of the National Theater “Ivan Vazov”.

High tension expected at Chess Classic Mainz 2009

From 27.7-02.08 once again the best players in the world will meet in the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz to play the most important rapid chess festival in the world, the Chess Classic. The world championships in rapid chess and Chess960 will be staged in a tried and trusted double round robin format with four players, after which the players battle it out in mini-matches to determine the top spot. The players for the main events have already been contracted.
