Top seeded in the main event of the British championship is the young talent GM David Howell (ELO 2614). His main competition will be GM Stuart Conquest (defending champion), GM Gawain Jones, GM Stephen Gordon, GM Simon Williams, GM Keith Arkell, GM Peter Wells, GM Mark Hebden, GM Aaron Summerscale, and GM Daniel Gormally.
The 2nd International Chess Tournament – Arad Open 2009 will take place on August 8-14th in Arad, Romania. The main tournament is a 9-round Swiss open with a prize fund of over 3,500 euros, giving the opportunity of earning GM/IM norms.
Youth and experience will clash in the traditional Open Women’s Bulgarian Chess Championship “Thracian Princess”. The championship starts today in Vratsa with the participation of 4 WGMs, 4 WIMs, 4 WFMs, and many talented youngsters.
GM Wesley So and GM Zhang Zhong are the top rated players at the staring Zone 3.3 chess championship in Vietnam. They are the only players over 2600 ELO, however, their task will not be an easy one. Their closes rivals will be youth and experience – GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, the young talent from Vietnam, and GM Eugenio Torre, the first Asia grandmaster.
It will take place 16-18 October 2009 in Kallithea and will be a Swiss rapid with time control 25 mins for the whole game.
The tournament will be a rapid Swiss event, taking place in Villarrobledo, Albacete, Spain. The dates are 25-26 July, 2009. There will be more than 30 GMs and many titled players in one of the strongest rapid tournaments of the year.
KL Open Chess Championship will take place September 3-9 in Kuala Lumpur. It will be a Swiss tournament, rated by FIDE, with time control 90 minutes for the whole game with 30 seconds increment for every move starting from the first move.
Miguel Naidorf International Chess Festival is set to take place on 18th-26th July in Warsaw, Poland. The Festival will consist of four events: Grandmaster tournament, Open for players rated above 2000, Open for players U2000, and tournament for kids born 1999 and later.
The Canadian Open Chess Championship 2009 will take place 11-19 July in Edmonton, Alberta.
Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov will play a 12 games match from 21 to 24 September, 2009, in Valencia. It will consist of 4 rapid (or semi rapid) and 8 blitz games and will take place exactly 25 years after the mythical encounter between the two players.
