Starting today, August 30th, Chessdom.com begins the Chess Olympiad 2010 countdown. Every day until the opening ceremony in Khanty Mansiysk, a women and a men team will be presented on the main page. It will include description of the participants, their recent achievements, interviews, statements, statistics!

The fact is that the number of pre inscriptions for the 1st International Livigno Chess Open has steadily increased over the past weeks, and now it has overtaken the 60 player quota. Among them, there are many Grandmasters, whereas two thirds of the players have an Elo higher than 2000. More than a dozen nations are represented.

They played classical games 26 times, out of which, beside 20 draws, 3-3 wins and losses can be enumerated. In their 30 rapid games the same balance can be observed: 20 draws, 5-5 wins and losses. In the semi final of the Rapid World Cup in Odessa, Lékó prevailed in 2007 while two years later Gelfand attained the title.

Azerbaijan Youth & Sport Ministry and Azerbaijan Chess Federation are organizing the International Chess Tournament Baku Open 2010, set to take place from 22nd to 31st August at the “Af Hotel”, near Caspian Sea, Novkhani.

The NH Chess Tournament Rising Stars vs Experience will take place in Amsterdam, August 12th-22nd, 2010. The ‘Experience’ team consists of Boris Gelfand (Israel), Peter Svidler (Russia), Peter Heine Nielsen (Denmark), Loek van Wely (The Netherlands) and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Serbia).

The ‘Rising Stars’ are Hikaru Nakamura (United States), Fabiano Caruana (Italy), Wesley So (The Philippines), Anish Giri (The Netherlands) and David Howell (England).

XI Obert Internacional d’Escacs de Figueres

The 11th Obert Internacional d’Escacs de Figueres “Miquel Mas” is set to take place from 11th to 18th August in Figueres, Spain. The games will take place in “Martín Zermeño’s Auditorium”, in the Castle of Sant Ferran, which is situated at the end of Pujada del Castell’ street, 12 minutes walk from Dalí’s Museum. This open tournament is a part of the grand VII Catalan International Chess Circuit.

The Chess Academy Chalkis “Palamedes Evia” is organising the 1st international chess tournament “Negroponte 2010″, which will be held from 9th to 17th August, 2010, at the beautiful city of Chalkis, Greece. The tournament will be Open, 9 rounds Swiss with total prize fund of 25.000 EUR. The first prize is 3.500 EUR, and there will be special awards for women, juniors, rating performance, etc.
