This year a number of closed events like Linares, Mtel Masters, or even opens like Arctic Chess Challenge are suffering from the financial crisis. But are things really projecting to be so negative financially in the chess world? Not exactly, many traditional opens are coping well with the crisis, while another class of tournaments is emerging – the “Super Opens”.
These are events with over 30000 EUR prize fund and are open festivals for everyone. Aeroflot 2011 (125 000 eur), Cappelle La Grande 2011 (30 000 eur), Dubai Chess Open (45,000 USD), and Nakhchivan Open (66,500 USD) are just some of the events that have been going on for the first months of this year.
The latest Super Open that was announced is Albena Chess Open. It will take place 25th June – July 3rd in the Albena sea resort (near Varna, Bulgaria), and is boasting a prize fund of over 40,000 EUR.
The first prize in Albena is the impressive 8000 eur, but what is even better for the chess enthusiasts, there are 30 prizes ranging from 1000 to 100 eur for amateur chess players, and 16 prizes ranging from 500 to 100 eur for youngsters. Exactly such prize distribution is very typical for the Super Opens and beneficial to the whole chess community.
The response has been very enthusiastic and a week before the start of the tournament more than 240 players are signed to participate. The latest additions are Bulgarian star player Ivan Cheparinov and reigning Romanian champion Constantin Lupulescu. Full list is bellow.
Albena Chess Open rules and regulations
Albena Open 2011 will take place 25th June – July 3rd. It is a 9 round open Swiss tournament with time control 90 minutes for each player plus 30 seconds per move starting from the first move.
Accommodation is provided right next to the playing hall and starts for as low as 11 eur/night, an incredible deal for the high season of summer for one of the major Black Sea resorts.

More about the Albena summer resort
The resort of Albena is situated 32 km north of Varna and just 12km south-west of Balchik on a long sand stretch in the open northern part of Varna Bay. The resort’s errection was started in 1968, which makes it one of the most modern holiday cities along the Bulgarian coast.
The complex lies beneath a relatively high hill and is given particular charm by the near-by forest of Baltata, a part of which is declared a protected area. The latter is also called Batova Gora (Batova Forecast) after the Batova river, in the valley of which it grows.
The Albena’s architecture resembles one of Walter Gropius’ urban models as most of the hotels have a terraced structure aimed at providing as much sun as possible in summer days. To the north the coast is steep, featuring yellow sandstone and limestone typical of the area. It is in fact this stone slope that was the main source of construction material for the resort.
The resort is remarkable for its 5-km long, 150 m wide beach with very fine and clean sand; the sea water is usually crystal clear, calm and warm. Sea depth does not exceed 1.6 metres at a distance up to 100-150 metres from the beach. Visitors can choose from one of the 43 modern hotels (two to four stars) offering more than 20 000 beds and many amenities. Most of the hotels have swimming pools.
Instead of several small beaches interspersed with city life that you’ll find in other resort areas, Albena Beach is one long seven kilometer stretch of the Black Sea which makes you feel as though there is nothing else in the world except for you and the sand!
The water, which actually appears to be black, is some of the calmest in the world and holds the perfect conditions and temperatures for swimming and engaging in numerous water sports. The scenery is perfect with the white sands in sharp contrast to the water and it’s one of the best places in the world to watch the sun go down!
The resort offers visitors numerous sport and recreation activities including football pitches, multiple tennis courts, indoor stadium, golf courses, bowling, jet-ski, an equestrian base and many more. Albena hosts many cultural events and conferences.
