The Ascona Chess Festival will take place from the 3rd to the 9th of December, 2007, in Lugano, Switzerland. It will consist of 3 tournaments - The Ascona Open, the U25 Young Masters, and the InterNET Open. The total prize fund is 32 000 CHF, very attractive amount that will surely convince more strong players to sign up. The time control is 40 moves in 120 mins + 60 minutes, and it will be Swiss.
The main event will feature many strong GMs and IMs. Among them will be GM Boris Chatalbashev (champion of Bulgaria and participant in the ETCC 2007), GM Mihajlo Stojanovic (a frequent Chessdom contributor), GM Ivan Ivanisevic, GM Vadim Malakhatko, GM Christian Bauer, IM Elena Sedina, etc. In the Young Masters U25 we will see GM Merab Guganashwili, GM Sebastien Maze, GM Leonid Kritz, WGM Sabina Foisor, WGM A. Stojanovic, WFM Gavrilova, etc.
Besides the three main events, the Ascona Chess Festival will feature blitz and rapid tournaments, which makes a total of 5 events! A true festival of chess. Expect updates of the participants list and interviews with players later this month.
