Capablanca Memorial will feature for the first time Premier group
The Cuban grandmaster Leinier Dominguez will be the top player in the 2009 Capablanca Memorial. Dominguez, winner of the 2008 edition of the tournament and frequent participant in the 2009 Grand Slam tournaments, will have a difficult task in this year’s closed group. His opponents will be Artyon Timofeev (2677) and Boris Savchenko (2655) from Russia, Igor Khenkin (2630) and Georg Meier (2641) from Germany, and his compatriot Lazaro Bruzon (2617).
The Cuban national radio stations informed today that besides the closed group, the 44th edition of the tournament will feature a Premier group with the participation of Vladimir Potkin (2621), Emilio Córdova (2543), and other grandmasters.
The traditional open tournament, part of the Capablanca Memorial ajedrez 2009, will take place as well, with players from Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Venezuela, and many local players from Cuba.
