The 3rd Kolkata Open international chess tournament will take place March 24 - April 01. The tournament is organized by the Alekhine chess club, Kolkata. It will be a 10 rounds swiss event with time control 2 hours per player. FIDE tiebreak rules will be applied.
The total prize fund is about 22 000 USD as the winner will take 5000. All outstation participants will be provided free hotel accommodation on double/ triple sharing basis.
Up to now 114 participants have signed up including 18 Grandmasters from 15 nations. 62 titled players and 30 internationals from Armenia, Bangladesh, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Iran, Luxemborg, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa and Russia are among the participants. Sasikiran, India’s No.2 after Viswanathan Anand, with a world ranking of 39, is the top seeded of the event. The second highest ranked woman player in the world, Koneru Humpy, has confirmed her participation as well. The young U20 world chess champion GM Ahmed Adly will join as well. GM Viktor Laznicka, GM Alberto David, GM Smbut Lputian, IM Mohammad Lodi, Watu Kobese and Kenny Solomon complete the strong international participation at Kolkata Open. Local GMs Sandipan Chanda, Dibyendu Barua and Neelotpal Das strengthen the Indian challenge.
The 3rd Kolkata Open field is quite strong despite the fact that it clashes with important chess events in Australia, Russia, and China. Expect frequent reports on Chessdom.com and the official site
