1st International Chess Tournament Paleohora

21-28th July in Pelekanos, Crete

The Chania Chess Academy is organizing the 1st International Chess Tournament Paleohora from 21st till 28th July 2008. Pelekanos municipality (Paleohora) is part of Chania prefecture, in the southwestern extremity of Crete Island, facing the Libyan Sea and representing the most southern place of the European Union. There will be 9 rounds with Swiss pairing system and time control is 90 min for 40 moves + 15min + 30sec per move from the first move.

Prizes: 1st – 2.200 €, 2nd – 1.500 €, 3rd – 1000 €, 4th – 600 €, 5-6th – 400 €, 7-10th – 250 €, Best Woman – 500 €, 2st Woman – 300 €, 3rd Woman – 200 €, Best U18 – 200 €

Already two months before the start, the field is extremely strong, with three Grandmasters rated above 2600 FIDE. So far 133 players registered, top rated are 2007 US champion GM Alexander Shabalov 2633, GM Vadim Malakhatko 2621, GM Yuriy Kryvoruchko 2612, GM Mykhailo Oleksienko 2591, GM Stelios Halkias 2584, GM Dimitris Mastrovasilis 2580, GM Robert Fontaine 2563, GM Mircea Parligras 2561 and GM David Alberto 2557.

The organizers are providing excellent hotel rates even at the peak of touristic season, but interested players should apply early, preferable before July 1st.
