Elista Grand Prix and Nanjing

Michael Adams quits the Grand Prix?

FIDE Grand Prix – Doha

The first rest day at the 2008 Chess Olympiad is a good moment to mention some of the forthcoming tournaments before we turn our focus back to the action in Dresden. Doha, Qatar will be hosting the third stage of the FIDE Grand Prix on 13th-29th December. Previous two stages took place in Baku and Sochi (schedule and rules). It is less than a month before the tournament opens but there are no marketing activities whatsoever. One might have expected FIDE and Global Chess to do more than simply borrowing lines from Mr.Bozic’s message to Chessdom.

Update: Many things have become clearer (not), after Doha Grand Prix has been canceled and the tournament is expressly moved to – where else – Elista.

Current leaders in the GP Standings – Wang Yue (273,3 points), Vugar Gashimov (218,3) and Teimour Radjabov (210), will be all playing in Elista, seeking an opportunity to earn more points by the end of the year. Top seeded is Magnus Carlsen, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov will complete Azeri presence, while Montreux’s nominee Yannick Pelletier climbs on the stage for the first time.

Update (Dec 9): Apparently, Michael Adams has also withdrawn from the Grand Prix! His name is not on the list of the participants for Elista tournament, as originally scheduled. Magnus Carlsen pulled out earlier, Mohamad Al Modiahki and Yannick Pelletier are being replaced after their sponsors quit the series.

The four new players are Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine, Evgeny Alekseev of Russia, Vladimir Akopian of Armenia and Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan.

Nanjing Chess Tournament

Levon Aronian hinted in a quick interview on the first day of the European Club Cup that he will be playing double round robin tournament in Nanjing, China in December, but he couldn’t provide more information. The Bulgarian news agencies speculated that Veselin Topalov will also play there unless the match with Kamsky comes on the way. Finally, Susan Polgar’s posting revealed the full list of six participants. With so many top Grandmasters bound for Doha, including China’s own Wang Yue, the organizers were forced to seek for alternatives. Nevertheless, the tournament will reach impressive 21st category, according to average FIDE ratings.

It is possible that this event is product of the Grand Slam Association’s efforts to expand its circuit to the Asian continent. Bu Xiangzhi has been invited to 2008 Mtel Masters in order to encourage this process, and for the first time a big tournament website provided a special version in Chinese language. Nanjing tournament will take place on 10-22nd December.
